End User: Video Ezy SATO Products: HT200e, Customised Labels
Overview: Video Ezy is an Australia wide chain of over 450 DVD stores offering rental and sales. Stores operate on a franchise model with independent or group ownership of stores across the chain. As a household name for over two decades, Video Ezy strives for excellence in home entertainment, delivering to its members a service that is dynamic and innovative with a focus on quality and value for money.
Issues: Labelling of merchandise had traditionally provided challenges when trying to present standardised presentation across all stores. Labelling had taken various forms from handwritten labels to hand labelling guns to professionally printed depending on the store. A common issue was that more than one label was required to show Video Ezy branding as well as product pricing. Overall the pricing in store, especially during promotions presented a time-intensive activity for staff and duplication of labels meant unnecessary costs.
Solution: Combination of SATO HT200e printer and range of custom printed Video Ezy label designs means that only a single label is necessary to brand and price products. The standalone capabilities of the HT200 with its own keypad and battery option for complete portability mean that labelling time has been significantly reduced. Custom labels combined with formats within printer enable in-store overprinting of pricing labels on demand for fast pricing and markdown of products at any time they are required. The end result presents professional company branding but more importantly improved customer service and increased impulse purchases through clear pricing of products.
Benefits: More efficient labelling means lower costs through reduced consumable requirements and decreased demand on time in store to label products, but more importantly improved branding and labelling of products for customers has meant increased sales.
Customer comments:
"It is easy to use, staff can just print labels as and when they need them. The labels look very professional and far better than the handgun/handwritten labels we were previously using. " Michelle, Paterson Group Retail Manager.
"It just makes life so much easier. You are able to change label designs and promotions at the touch of a button. I can now change price point and run new promotions very easily - the flexibility is great." Michael, Store Owner Mount Gambier.

End User: New Balance SATO Products: HT200e, Custom printed price markdown labels
Overview: New Balance is a leading global athletic products company, specialising in superior athletic footwear. Their global product brands include New Balance, Dunham, PF Flyers, Aravon, Warrior and Brine. The Australian business focuses on the New Balance brand, with operations including 11 branded outlet stores in addition to the broad supply nationally to hundreds of sporting goods stores.
Issues: The existing system for pricing and price markdowns in the outlet stores was limited, extremely manual and lacking in appeal to customers looking for an impulse purchase. When stock arrived in store a new barcode label with the "retail" price for the product was printed and attached to each item and then the markdown price was then handwritten onto items using a "red pen". Each item required this 2 step process prior to being placed on show in store.
Solution: New Balance chose to trial the HT and label system in-store to prove the concept to themselves and gain both staff and customer feedback. The system included overprinting of their chosen labels with the Recommended Retail Price (RRP) as well as highlighting the "NOW" price for the product as a single step process, completely replacing the need to print a new barcode or handwrite on products. The feedback from staff at the trial site and the stores customers was positive and the increased sales proved the concept. The system has since rolled out across all outlet stores.
Benefits: The labelling system is vastly quicker and easy for staff to use. Eliminating one of the steps in the process to prepare stock for the shopfloor saved considerable time in store. In addition the appearance of stock was vastly improved by the use of professional looking labels, providing greater appeal to customers as shown in increased turnover/sales of stock in stores.

End User: Angus & Robertson SATO Products: SATO Label Gallery Plus software, Range of custom manufactured labels supplied to company & franchise stores
Overview: Angus & Robertson is Australia's largest book seller, having over 170 branded locations nationally with a mixture of company owned and franchised stores. With its long history and continued focus on maintaining excellent range and price, Angus & Robertson continues to be most recognised Australian book retailing brand.
Issues: All franchise stores are supplied from a single centralised warehouse location where all products for franchise stores are required to be labelled prior to shipment. To complete this requirement the process had been somewhat manual collecting details of the books, manually entering the code for the books into SAP along with how many labels were needed. The data entry to create the labels required was an extremely long process and often caused delays especially during periods where high volumes of books were being handled in the warehouse. The requirement to print on-demand labels more quickly was seen as a top priority for the warehouse manager.
Solution: Utilising data capture terminals in the warehouse, books requiring labels are scanned and the quantity of labels required captured and all data is downloaded. The data file is then extracted to the SATO Label Gallery Plus software to automatically advise the thermal printer to produce labels. Once labels are printed they are then in turn applied to the books utilising a SATO Hand Labelling tool.
Benefits: Time taken to capture the data relating as to what product labels are required has been substantially reduced and staff time previously required for data entry has been totally eliminated. In addition rather than the labels being printed one type as a time post data entry, they can now be printed as a batch, allowing for faster printing but also more efficient application to products. Any cost of the software has been more than offset by the savings in time.
