End User: Adelaide Mushrooms

Overview:
Adelaide Mushrooms is Australia's second largest mushroom producer, having recently doubled its production capacity with it's new growing facility at Monarto (approx 30 acres under roof in the new facility). The business now produces in excess of 125,000 tonnes of fungi each week utilising the state of the art facilities, high tech equipment and 140 + staff. While seemingly operating in a low tech environment, Adelaide Mushrooms are constantly looking to improve their processes to ensure top quality products to satisfy demand.
Issues:
Due to transient nature of their workforce, one of the biggest challenges facing Adelaide Mushrooms was traceability and measurement of employee efficiency and productivity. This issue was of particular significance in the new facilities as the team members are remunerated based upon the weight of mushrooms picked and weighed. In line with the new high-tech facilities the management at Adelaide Mushrooms wanted a solution that would eliminate the issue but also utilise available technology.
Solution:
The solution required setting up specific employee and location identifiers, use of barcoded labels and scanning systems. At the commencement of each shift team members log in to the system and produce labels to attach to the produce that they pick. As cartons are completed they are labelled, then they are weighed and scanned. The scanning records the weight of the carton against the employee, tracking quantity of cartons and overall productivity. Employees are then remunerated based upon the data collected via the system. Labels are produced via SATO Label Gallery specifically designed interface, printed on SATO GL 408e printer and are scanned into backend operating system utilising Motorola/Symbol scanners.
Benefits:
All product related activities are now more easily able to be tracked. Volume of each kind of product, from what location and who picked the end product are now all recorded and available for use throughout the business. Entire system has been designed to suit all the specific requirements of the business and staff to ensure accuracy with simplicity and the solution delivers just that to Adelaide Mushrooms.
